This included internal database records, vector embeddings, AI model configuration metadata, prompt-injection security rules, quality-evaluation information and other application data.

We also identified Supabase Edge Functions that could be invoked anonymously. Depending on the underlying function, this creates opportunities for unauthorized use of backend compute, AI-model costs, information extraction and abuse of privileged backend operations.

The important point wasn’t that a Supabase anonymous key existed, those keys can legitimately be present in frontend applications.

The problem was what the anonymous role was allowed to do with it.

Our assessment traced the underlying weaknesses to excessive anonymous permissions, missing or overly permissive Row Level Security policies, direct frontend exposure of internal resources, and insufficient authorization around backend functions.

From there, we provided a remediation path:

Restrict anonymous permissions and remove public access to sensitive tables.

Properly enforce Row Level Security (RLS).

Keep embeddings, internal AI configuration and security controls server-side.

Strengthen authentication and authorization on Edge Functions.

Add input validation, rate limiting, cost controls and abuse monitoring.

Review potentially exposed user-derived data for privacy impact.

Retest anonymous access after remediation to confirm sensitive resources are protected.

This is exactly why application security needs to look beyond the frontend.

A chatbot can have a polished interface and a capable AI model while the real security boundary sits several layers deeper: APIs, authorization policies, databases, serverless functions, AI pipelines and the assumptions connecting all of them.

Finding those assumptions before somebody else does is the point.

What happens when an AI application works as intended, but its backend trusts the public a little too much?
